This morning at 2:30 am, the alarm on my phone went off telling me to get up for the annual Product Hunt Golden Kitty Awards.
After trying to make a coffee as quietly as possible (my girlfriend was asleep and had work in the morning) I set up my laptop and webcam on the other side of the house to watch the show.
I had absolutely no idea what to expect - I'd never been to anything like this before. But, I was blown away. It was so much fun!
The hosts were great, and there was so much entertainment in between award categories. The best was a guy who freestyle rapped using suggestions from the chat. But, there was music, comedians, a quiz, a magician and a mini-panel.
2 coffees, 1 tea, and 2.5 hours in. The product demo video category was called, and I was moved into a virtual green room, then onto the virtual stage. My webcam feed could be seen by everyone watching.
All our videos were played for everyone to watch - some great publicity.
After all four videos had finished, it was time to announce the winner.
"And the winner is..."
Not me this time. But, it's all good!
I enjoyed the experience so much, despite being quite sleep deprived. Massive congrats to all the winners, and I think I might get some runners-up prizes which is nice.
Watching this made me think that this Indie Hacker Movement is only going to get bigger. Only 1,000 people watched this show, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's double that next year. It feels awesome to have been part of it in these "early days".
At 6:00 am I closed my laptop and went back to sleep. The sun had just come up, so I got to witness my first Australian sunrise.
